Week Five: Starting Clouds

For the next few weeks I am going to draw one big final project.  It was extremely hard to decide what I thought would be worth all of the time and effort a huge detailed drawing would take.  Sadly, it took multiple ideas and sketches before I decided upon clouds.  There are several reasons I chose this; I can make it more and more detailed as I progress, and I can make it as hard as I want.

To go about starting this drawing, I first made a border,  I did this with painters tape, this will provide a clean edge to my drawing when I'm done to make it look more refined.  Next, Pinterest provided me the picture inspiration.  I took a picture of some clouds and sketched the very simple outline onto my two canvases.  Then, I shaded in the sky portion.  This has taken me about two hours alone as the shading has to be very even and there is a lot to do (even within this timeframe I wasn't able to finish it).

So here is my progress thus far.  Next week I will have the sky finished and will move onto making cleaner edges and begin detailing.  The cloud outline practically impossible to see, sorry.  I had to draw it extremely light to avoid the lines being visible when finished.

    I think one, large project is a great way to show us what you have learned and how you have progressed. I have thought about doing a large project, but I doubt I will.

    I can understand why clouds would be so challenging. Are there any tricks you can use to make it easier?

Shark Tank: Charcoal Drawing

After doing macrame for my last genius hour, I decided to do something a little more challenging for myself.  So, I will be charcoal drawing for my next project.  I chose to do this because it is something that I have never done before and I think that it will challenge me and be hard for me to make something I love.  I discussed my plans as to what I would be drawing in my Shark Tank Pitch. Week Seven: Next Canvas

Just as I was hoping, I was able to finish the first canvas of my cloud drawing!  While it isn't perfect, I decided to get a start on the other because I can always go back and make small changes.  So that's what I did.  I finished the clouds and moved onto the sky of the next canvas. While the second canvas requires less detailing it has a lot of shading.  Being mostly sky, it was really time consuming to evenly shade the sky, sooo… I gave up.  I just got it done so I could go back and darken it later.  As with the first canvas, I traced around the basic shape of my clouds to go over later and refine.  I found that shading became a lot easier by using my hand, this made the process a lot faster. Week One: Abstract Realism

Well, I finished my first drawing. YAYYY!!!  Earlier this week I spent an hour scrolling through pictures on Pinterest trying to find the perfect thing for me to draw.  It seems a little ridiculous to look so hard for a picture, but I wanted to love it.  Soooooo, yes, I am too picky. It took me awhile to decide on how to go about the drawing because I can't draw a chart on the canvas which is how I have always drawn.  What I did was draw the rough sketch out onto paper in pen and then transferred it over to my canvas by shining light through it. Once I was done drawing the basic shape onto the canvas I started shading.  This took me about three hours to complete and I am very proud of the finished product.  While there are still disproportions in the structure of the face, it is the first time I have ever tried to draw a person.  So not only is drawing with charcoal new, but also drawing people.  Admittingly, I have never even tr...
